Discovery in colour

About Corry Zaagsma:

Art plays and has always played an important role in my life. The wonder, the shapes, the colours. In my
twenties, I trained as an activity counsellor. Then I specialised in modelling in England and followed art
therapy training in the Netherlands. This gave me a good foundation. Later, I was introduced to Eugene
Gendlin’s focussing method, to be very aware and attentive in the present moment.

I have always wanted to learn to paint. It wasn’t until 2012 that this long-cherished wish came true, when I
met artist Bert van Mourik. He introduced me to the world of painting and its many applications.

In the process, I got to know various techniques. Among other things, I worked with sand, acrylic paint
and tile glue and then watched what emerged. Beforehand, I had no idea of what it should become. It
arose in the moment.

Materials

The size of canvas I paint on varies greatly. It depends on what I have available. When I have worked on a small format a few times, I move on to a larger format.

Nowadays I am much more aware of the process of creating a painting than when I first started. My experience allows me to play more with the different techniques and apply them more consciously. Acrylic paint, tile glue, clear varnish and coloured pencil are my favourite materials.

What I find special about working with clear varnish is that the colour becomes more expressive. Although sometimes it becomes a bit too bright or something else arises as the colour runs off. Adding lines with coloured pencil adds more form, more structure, to the whole. If I add a line on one side, it affects something else. Something happens.

It’s a constant looking, feeling, doing, being surprised and amazed. Just as it is in life. I follow my feelings while focusing, do and experiment intuitively and look at the beauty of what is, with a large dose of humour.
